Notebay is a notes app made by choidev. In short: your notes stay on your phone, encrypted, and the developer never receives them.

Your notes stay on your device

Notes, attachments, drawings, voice recordings, charts, calendar events, reminders and timetables are stored only on your device, encrypted with AES-256-GCM using keys held in the Android Keystore. The developer runs no server and receives none of this data. The app has no analytics and no crash-reporting SDK.

Ads (Google Play version)

The Google Play version shows one banner ad from Google AdMob at the bottom of the note list. To show and measure it, Google may collect your device's advertising ID, your interactions with ads, diagnostics and an approximate location derived from your IP address, as described at https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads. Users in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent first and can change it later in Settings. Your notes, titles, attachments and searches are never given to the ads SDK.

Optional Google Drive backup

If you turn on backup, the app uses the drive.appdata permission to store backups in a hidden app folder of your own Google Drive. Backups are encrypted on your phone with a passphrase only you know, before they are uploaded. The app cannot see any other file in your Drive. You can disconnect at any time. If you forget your passphrase, nobody, including the developer, can recover your backups.

Link previews

When you put a web address alone on a line, the app requests that page directly from the site you entered to make a preview card. Nothing passes through a developer server. The preview is stored encrypted with the note, and the feature can be turned off in Settings.

Location and maps

The app reads your location only when you tap "My location" in the place picker, once, while you use the app. It is stored only on your device and in your encrypted backup, and is never sent to the developer or to the ads SDK. There is no background location. Map tiles for the area you view are downloaded from tiles.openfreemap.org over HTTPS (only tile coordinates and the app's user agent are sent). Place search uses your phone's Android Geocoder.

Permissions

Notifications and exact alarms: to ring reminders and calendar alerts on time.

Biometrics: to unlock the app, locked folders and locked notes.

Microphone: to record voice notes, which stay on your device.

Camera: to take photos and scan documents into a note. Camera photos are never saved to your gallery, and location data is removed from photos.

Location (while in use, optional): only for "My location" in the place picker.

Internet: for backups, link previews, map tiles and the ad banner.

Deleting your data

Uninstalling the app deletes everything on the device. Backups can be deleted from inside the app, or by removing the app's data in your Google Drive settings.

Children

Notebay is not directed at children under 13.
